Public interest litigation to build another dam on the river

A public interest litigation has been filed in the High Court demanding that another dam, such as the Hirukud Dam, be built on the Mahanadi.

The case, filed by Dillip Kumar Ray, a former joint secretary of the High Court Bar Association, shows that once a historic step was taken, the Hirakud Dam was built on the Mahanadi. Many districts are now flooded every year due to the river. Another dam needs to be built on the river. Efforts should be made to keep the water coming during the floods into another reservoir. This will no longer destroy the river water. In addition, flood control can be largely controlled. The petitioner pointed out that irrigation and electricity generation would also be possible. The petition states that the Central and State Governments should be directed to this effect.
